Home Improvement Tips - Eliminating Indoor Air Pollution With Air Purifiers

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

The following article is from a series of home articles, tips and information on electronic air purifiers

Indoor air pollution is a problem that creates a greater health issue than most people are aware of and it should not be taken lightly, since most people end up spending 90% of their time inside. In order to gain in energy efficiency, homes are tightly sealed against the elements, but this traps contaminants and toxins in the air. The best way to eliminate those pollutants is with air purifiers.

The biggest impact that indoor air pollution has on health is easily seen in the growing number of incidences of asthma and allergies sufferers. Interestingly, this marked increase in respiratory problems is being observed in developed countries around the globe. In addition to allergens being trapped in homes by better seals on windows and doors, it is also believed that the chemicals used in our homes for every day cleaning and maintenance are also to blame. These chemicals build up over time, eventually reaching toxic levels when the air in a home is stagnant and not cleaned.

Both home and office environments are ripe for developing significant air quality problems, and for the same reasons. High quality air cleaners can be used in both homes and offices to reduce the amount of particulate contamination in the air, significantly improving air quality. Polluted air that is taken in regularly can cause many respiratory problems, including asthma and has recently been linked to the rising incidence of lung cancer.

Another area where home air cleaners should always be used, are in hair, beauty and nail salons. Nail salon technicians and cosmetologists are at higher risks of developing breathing problems and lung disease because they are constantly exposed to higher than normal levels of potent chemicals, such as formaldehyde. This fact alone makes them 1.8 times more likely to end up with lung cancer because of this exposure. Proper air purification in their environments can help to reduce that risk.

Air purifiers are able to remove allergens and contaminants from the air. They significantly reduce the main contaminants found in home environments, like dust, pollen, mold spores, dust mite feces and pet dander, just to name a few. They can also be helpful in removing tobacco smoke particles from the air as well. When the level of such pollutants is reduced, so is the risk of triggering allergies, developing asthma or getting cancer.

A side benefit of regular use of air purifiers in the home is that they can also help to decrease the frequency of dusting and vacuuming, since the particles are removed by the air purifier rather than settling on furniture and the floor.

There is a wide variety of home air purification units available on the market. Prices range from under $100 for a very basic unit that can effectively clean the air in a small room, to sophisticated home air purification systems that can cost up to thousands of dollars, depending on the size of the house and the level of purification desired.

For the most part, air purifiers are very energy efficient. This is important since they must be running around the clock to be effective. Another consideration, in addition to the price of the unit and the amount of electricity it uses, is the cost of replacement filters and how frequently they need to be replaced.

Miniature Bamboo - How To Maintain Healthy Miniature Bamboo

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

The popularity of miniature bamboo is on the rise given it’s qualities to enhance either an outdoor garden setting or as an indoor plant.

The miniature bamboo plant, known as Pogonatherum is part of the Poaceae family and is very popular in South East Asia. The miniature bamboo has a distinct liking for full sun and is prone to plenty of moisture. It is also very hardy and with the proper maintenance, could survive in much colder climates.

It grows to a height of around 1-2 feet and portrays a leafy image. This is part of it’s attractiveness for people in western countries and for decorative purposes, it won’t let you down.

Miniature bamboo loves moist ground. It’s excellent along the edges of backyard ponds where it has a regular supply of moist conditions. It makes for a great border addition.

It’s also popular as an indoor plant and will adapt to it’s surroundings. This means partial light conditions shouldn’t be a problem provided it has a constant supply of water.

Maintenance Requirements Of Miniature Bamboo

If you intend featuring it in an outside garden then as we mentioned, water is important to keep the plant happy. It will reward you quite nicely if it has access to a sunny position but can also adapt to filtered light conditions.

It’s a good idea to fertilize at regular intervals. Certainly fertilizing at the start of the warm season makes good sense but keep an eye on the plant as further applications during this time may be required.

Pruning back the miniature bamboo’s foliage will encourage a dense growth and if you intend for the plant to act as a border, then pruning is recommended to get this effect.

Regular leaf trimming is desirable for indoor miniature bamboo. Don’t be concerned too much if the leaves begin to dry. Prune back the plant to 4-6 inches to encourage rejuvenation.

Amplify Your Real Estate Returns Without Home Improvements

Friday, October 12th, 2007

To maximise your profits when investing in real estate, it is important to evaluate the figures that are relevant to your prospective real estate purchases just as you would do with share holdings.

Once you have defined the location that you are going to invest in (the dynamics you should take into consideration when selecting a target area form part of our create property wealth article, but fall beyond the range of this article), you should bring a comprehensive Inspection Check List which you can fill out whilst inspecting each property.

You could define your own such check list, locate one on the internet, or otherwise use a real estate analysis program designed for this function.

One such award winning program is the POSH Property Software. POSH Property Owner Software is actually 2 programs in 1, as it contains a Property Analysis Part, as well as a thorough Management Part.

The complete workflow of the software program is actually designed to mimic the real estate investment process from inspection, thru to buying, financing, leasing, and finally selling.

The Analysis Part enables you to analyze and evaluate many potential purchases against one another with a thorough Inspection Check List which you can print out and take with you when viewing possible purchases.

Afterwards, upon returning to your house or office, you can submit your entries into the program in order to evaluate gross vs net yields, dollars per square meter, PE ratios, internal rate of return, forecast capital appreciation, and before and after tax cashflow. The reports it then generates will allow you to consider and compare multiple potential properties against one another.

Beyond the analysis facets of the software program, it also enables you to manage your real estate portfolio by permiting you to enter and keep track of all revenue and expenses that are relevant to each of your properties. This includes such things as loan interest and associated loan and refinance costs, tenancy and lease information, property management expenses, council and water rates and insurance, and maintenance expenses.

Once entered, POSH permits you to create detailed revenue and expense reports, depreciation schedules, rent receipts, and can compute your capital gains tax you would need to pay upon sale of the property. Another module enables you to generate a thorough budget and contrast it, as time passes, with your actual revenue and expenses.

Along with the benefits sumarised above, using a program like POSH will also make your workload lighter at tax time. With all of your revenue and expense data pre-entered as it was incurred during the course of the previous year, you need only click a few buttons to output a few reports to bring to your accountant, and these will hold all the information he or she is likely to need to prepare your return.

You may not be preparing to be the next Rick Otton of We Buy Houses in real estate investing, with dozens of properties in your portfolio, but you need not be in order for POSH to be of substantial assistance and benefit to you. Property investment is a capital intensive activity, so the cost of a program like the POSH Property Owner System is a pittance when measured against with the financial benefit you could derive from the education and breakdown provided in the Analysis Component of POSH in supporting you to choose a property that is liable to do better than the others in a given locality.

Everything About Home
If you are thinking of having a house built for you, you might want to do double the thinking. What sounds good at first might not end up like you think. It also might cost more than you think.

The cost of building is going up every day. If you don’t know what you want your house to be like then you should do your research first. Adding just a simple thing can make the cost of building sky rocket as well as changing things in the middle of the building process.

There are many things that influence the major decisions that we make in our lives. We can have long thought out plans and preparations, yet there are times when events can alter our plans without any warning. My husband and I talked about having a home by a lake for our retirement years. We planned our investments, savings and time off towards achieving that goal. Then one day I happened past a house on a large lake just as a realtor was placing a for sale sign in the front yard. I had often admired the house and I took down the reality information. When I looked at that property listing on the internet I was pleasantly surprised that the price seemed to be affordable. We were still several years away from retirement but we made an appointment to see the house. We fall involve with the hundred year old home and the wonderful lake property it sat on. We made the huge decision to move to the lake home and commute.

We have lived in our lake home for six years and have decided that this would be a great time to up grade to a new house. Our property has increased in value so we have decided to look into the cost of building a new home. We have had six years to get to know the lake and the lots that are still available on it. We have been watching the market for listings of build able lots. Recently a family decided to split off a nice level lot from the property they own. We immediately purchased the lot and contacted a local contractor to discuss the cost of building a new home.

Home Help and more on Home Advice.

We love our present home, but it is over a hundred years old. The master suite is in the upper level of the home and the laundry is in the basement. We know that as we age we are not going to be able to comfortably climb all the stairs that we are now. We have asked the contractor to find us a blueprint and also the cost of building a one story home. The contractor is concerned that we will not be able to get the size we want in a one story home and still have a nice yard because the lot is long and narrow. We want the majority of the rooms and windows to face the lake. After looking at many design options and the cost of building them we decided that we could build a two story home to have the space we wanted. We would have a main floor laundry as well as master bedroom and have the guest rooms on the upper level. By doing this we would not have to use the stairs on a daily bases, but would still be able to accommodate over night guests. We are now in the process of realizing another one of our dreams, having a home that is built just for us.

Home Remodeling Tips
Remodeling your bathroom can be a daunting task. Many people feel overwhelmed by the possibility, and so they never get around to it. Here are a few things to think about when taking on the project of remodeling your bathroom.
If you are in the market to sell your home, think about what will appeal to buyers the most. Check out some home improvement websites or magazines to see what is in style. Bathrooms and kitchens will sell homes, so don’t cut corners when remodeling your bathroom.
Flooring such as tile or natural stone are good choices in the bathroom. They will hold up well to wear and tear, and these materials are not overly susceptible to water damage like wood flooring is. If tile or stone floors are not in your budget, you can find laminate flooring that is very nice and mimics the appeal of the more expensive options. Choose flooring that is durable and easy to clean when remodeling your bathroom.
Updated fixtures are also important when remodeling your bathroom. New toilets do not cost that much and will really help improve the look of your bathroom. There are so many different sinks and faucets available. The sink can really be the focal point of your bathroom, since there are so many special ones out there. If you are going to spend money on one great thing, a new modern sink is a smart choice because it will create a lot of drama.
If you cannot afford to replace the tub, you can paint it to make it look new. There are also options that will fit a new veneer over your existing tub to make it look brand new. Many times these options will also include the walls surrounding the tub. If the tile work in your tub or shower area is outdated or damaged, replacing it will make remodeling your bathroom even more rewarding.
Lighting is another important aspect of remodeling your bathroom. Choose fixtures that are attractive, but will still provide adequate lighting. Sconces are a great options for bathrooms, but are usually used in addition to a main fixture. Choose a bulb that is not too harsh, so that the light is clean, but also pleasing.

Advice On Designing Your Fireplace

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

I’ve heard countless stories from my father and grandfather about how everyone used to build things from scratch. To this day I’m not sure if folks truly used to do this, or if the men in my family are exaggerating simply because they did it. Anyway, you can imagine all the things I heard growing up. If I wanted a bow for archery, my father would say you can make one of those. Did this apply to Fireplace Designs ?

Or if I was interested in a cool knife, my father would reply with heck, you can make one of those with the steel and grinder we have out in the shop. Gees, couldn’t the guy tell I just wanted to buy one? Fortunately some good did come from all this making, crafting and building. Now, as an adult, I am able to do plenty of cool things on my own. One of them was building a fireplace mantel.

Chances are you have a fireplace in your home. Maybe it’s wood-burning and maybe it’s gas. Either way, you need a decent hearth and mantel to enjoy it to the fullest. The great news is you can start building a fireplace hearth and mantel on your own. All it takes is some basic and rather inexpensive supplies. Naturally I am speaking of wooden ones. If you’re craving a granite or stone themed fireplace, then you may need to just shop around until you pinpoint the best deal.

However, building a fireplace hearth and mantel out of fine wood will absolutely save you some cash. Any maintenance work YOU decide to do on your home will save you from paying ridiculous labor charges. That’s where they always get you. The labor costs plenty more than the supplies ever do. And websites like do it yourself dot com can be of some assistance. I enjoy these informative websites because they’re free and they literally walk you through the process of building or fixing something.

Hit up Home Depot or Lowe’s. These are great places to find all the supplies you’ll need for hand building a fireplace mantel and/or hearth. I will say this; once your project is complete, you’ll gaze upon it in a whole new light. Every time you see that fireplace, you’ll grin with the satisfaction that you helped make it beautiful. There’s nothing quite like doing things yourself.

How To Understand Reviews On Chainsaws

Monday, October 1st, 2007

You can read as many reviews on chainsaws as you want but unless you actually take the time to see a machine you’re interested in personally then you’ll end up fighting a losing battle.

Why? Well, chainsaws can be a personal thing with personal preferences coming into play. Reading reviews on chainsaws with an open mind is mandatory. If you are simply looking for a chainsaw for spasmodic use around the yard then you’ll concentrate on light machines such as electric models.

Avoid getting into a tug of war in your mind about what you need as opposed to what you want. If all you require is a saw to perform a little trimming work every now and again it would be pointless buying a machine suited to felling forest trees.

There are some excellent electric chainsaw models available for home owners and this is a good area to begin your search.

If you require a saw to perform a little extra grunt work then look at the gas-powered range. As a homeowner, selecting a saw on the lighter side to handle but still powerful enough to complete your desired job is a good start.

Selecting a saw with an excellent center of gravity and good design goes without saying. Strong safety features which cut down the risk of fatigue and discomfort are other areas to consider. The problem with trying to make sense of reviews on chainsaws is that many operators are loyal to a particular brand. One may prefer a Stihl model in a particular size range while someone else “will swear black and blue” that the Husqvarna model is a better option.

Price is another consideration to make and in fact, could very well anchor your final decision. Spending hundreds of dollars on a chainsaw which is used rarely makes no sense. In the end, combining some of the points mentioned earlier, the expected usage agenda and finally price and you could finally arrive at your desired choice.

Credit Card Companies Can Hurt American Families

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Credit card companies have been making a killing as of late. In 2006 the credit card industry made 17 billion dollars off of just penalty fees alone. As of now the average household in America carries around $9,000 in unsecured credit card debt and pays out around $1,200 a year in interest on those cards. For many families this causes major problems, for the people who are tight on money as it is having these credit card bills causes massive stress.

One of the leading reasons people get divorced is due to financial related matters, and these money hungry bankers do not make it any easier. They use a wide array of tactics to scrape as much money from people as possible. The tricky “universal default” clause can cause your APR’s to skyrocket overnight, quite possibly with all of your creditors too. It has been said that some card companies have even held payments back so that they get reported as late, just so they can charge a late fee and bump up the interest.

Unfortunately there are not many options for debt relief either. There is credit counseling which can help reduce interest and consolidate all the debt down.
Credit card debt settlement is another option for people who are very deep in debt, but do not want to file bankruptcy. With settlement your actual balances will be reduced. Or for some families with equity in their home a debt consolidation loan may be a viable option. One thing is for sure though any of the three options above is much better than just making minimum payments forever with high interest.
