Carport Success

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Carports make a wonderful addition to your home. Not only do the add value but, if done correctly, they also help to beautify your house. What is the primary purpose of a carport? Put simply they keep your car looking like new by minimising the amount of fade that you get on the paint work and interior. But on top of that they also enable you to gracefully alight from your car in even the harshest of weather, whilst remaining dry and untroubled as you can empty all the children and groceries out of the car.

What to Make it From

Carports can be made from a wide range of materials. The most common one in my country is timber. It is a lovely material to work with, its light, easy to cut and can be turned and sawn to create the most intricate posts and fret work to decorate your new home addition. If you are looking for something a little more functional and less termite prone, then steel framed construction is the way to go. If can be painted with anti-rust paint, and even better if you can afford it is to use zinc-alum or galvanized steel. The steel posts can be made from either tubular steel of box sections, but the tubular versions lend themselves more easily to bending to make interesting shapes.

Batten It Down So It Won’t Blow Away

You will be surprised about the insurance that a few simple bolts will provide you. Take for example timber posts sitting on stirrups that are anchored into concrete footings. You could be cheap and drop in a couple of nails, but if you use a couple of 3 or 4 inch coach bolts, or even better drill right through and use a bolt with a thread and nut. Whatever choice you make, make sure you anchor all the points of weakness for maximum strength. See how at Carport

Roofing Options

Whatever you decide to use for your roofing material will dictate the finished looks of your carport. Steel sheets are functional and strong and allow for minimal falls to keep the profile of your carport to a minimum. Conversely tiles will require a much larger fall so that you don’t get water backing up and leaking into the roof space. You can even choose some form of bituminous sheeting such as malthoid, but it’s a bugger work with and in my view look pretty crappy.

Builder Required

DIY or contract builder fro your new carport? For me it’s a no brainer. If you are anything like me a DIY project can take years to finish, so if you want it done quickly a builder is the safest and quickest way to go. Whatever choice you make please ensure you check out your local building authority before building, or committing to build, your new carport.

Tips on How To Plumb a Basement in Clay Soil

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Clay soil basement construction poses several problems. Expansive soil can cause cracking in the foundation, basement walls and floor if proper precautions aren’t taken. Natural movement caused by expansive clay soils also require special precautions to be taken when installing basement plumbing. Pipes can burst if plumbing is too rigid.

Basement makeovers dont have to be difficult, but you do need to keep a few things in mind before you start work.

Floating walls keep the walls and floors from being damaged as the home moves with the expansion of clay soil. This allows the walls to move independently from the floor of the basement. The pipes need to be able to move upward with the floor but not push against the first floor of your home. The drainage pipes under the basement floor need to be able to breathe as well.

When you install bathrooms, laundry room, or a mudroom in the basement you need to allow for natural movement of clay soil. Installing flexible expansion couplings and expansion joints on basement plumbing will allow for this movement and keep the pipes from leaking at the joints or cracking.

Your pipes should ideally be new during installation. If you are working with pre-existing pipes make sure not to go from one type of metal to another. If you are using copper stay with copper pipes and the same goes for other metals. Take care to not to change the size of pipes accidentally. It is possible to go from one size to another but it is not always usually wise idea. You should also start with new pipes whenever possible. Older pipes can have lead solder break up while you are working with them and you do not want this to get into your water supply, even if it is for a shower and not drinking water.

Anywhere that you are attaching one length of pipe to another you need to add an expansion coupling. Expansion couplings are made of a synthetic polymer sleeve that slips over the ends of both pipes. Steel clamps are used to hold the coupling and pipes together. Once applied, the coupling will allow for a small amount of movement in the pipes. It is important to make sure you have the expansion couplings and not regular couplings as the expansion couplings are made to breathe with the home and the regular couplings aren’t made to move.

When installing a shower you can use reverse floating walls to stabilize pipes in the basement and allow movement in the top of the pipes. You should put as much of the plumbing in the same area as possible and use the same wet wall. A chase should be included and access can be either along a wall or in the ceiling.

Flex lines are needed for water supply lines. The main water supply line should go into the chase and have flex lines attached in that area to the pipes used in the basement. The most logical place for the chase access panel is in the utility room along with the hot water heater.

As well as having expansion joints and flexible couplings installed the pipes there should be enough space between the pipes and the ceiling/floor to keep from having the pipes push into the ceiling as the ground expands with the changes in the moisture in clay soil.

Expansion joints will be needed for installation of ground water drainage pipes also. This can be done below the basement floor, above the foundation. Drains can be placed in the basement floor allowing moisture that does enter the basement to run into the drainage system and away from the home.

Echo Chainsaws - The CS-306 Workhorse

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Comparing chainsaw models comes down to a person’s preference and it’s always difficult to recommend one brand over the other. However, for those looking for a tough, no fuss machine then Echo chainsaws are a great place to start.

There always seems to be one common theme with Echo among it’s faithful; toughness, durability and reliability. It’s hard to argue with any of these descriptions.

Sure giants like Husqvarna and Stihl dominate chainsaw discussions and with good reason but if your looking for an alternative, then Echo should be first on your list.

It’s great to have a fancy looking chainsaw but what’s the point if it crumbles other the pressure of regular cutting. Likewise, new features are good marketing points but just like motor vehicles, the one main aspect you need performing right is the heart of the machine…the engine. This is where Echo seems to outperform most of it’s competitors.

They back this up with excellent warranties on - up to five years on engine driven products.

Echo CS-306 Chainsaw

Many newcomers to the chainsaw scene will be confused with what’s on offer in the market place. It’s important if you’re simply wanting a saw to do some of the jobs around the house and yard, you don’t over capitalize and choose too big a machine.

The Echo CS-306 chainsaw has been popular for some time now and is ideal for home users. It’s lightweight design makes it particularly easy to handle which is important from a safety aspect. Fatigue is the bane of many chainsaw operators and a heavy machine will bring it on a lot quicker.

The CS-306 is packed with safety features such as it’s excellent anti-vibration system. It’s 14″ bar is another attractive aspect although the 12″ version is available. Then of course, it’s two-stroke engine, one of Echo’s pride and joys. It will deliver high performance for many years provided you keep up regular maintenance schedules.

It’s one of the stars of the Echo chainsaws team.

The CS-306 is suitable for both the home user and professional operator and price wise, it’s great value. The saw can vary in price however, between $200-$300, it will give you many hours of reliable service.

Bamboo window Shades - The Secret To Buying Bamboo Shades

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Shopping for bamboo window shades has become as easy as typing in the term in your favorite search engine and sifting through lots of results.

Bamboo window shades will most times add a classy look to any room or decor in your home and are certainly worth considering over more conventional window blinds. The great thing about bamboo window shades is you can just install one and transform the look of any window or room. Like the exotic flavor?…well, you can’t go wrong with bamboo.

When shopping for shades the same principle applies online as off line…shop around. Get quotes from a variety of sites and then compare. Don’t be surprised if there is a substantial variance in price.

The company you finally decide is the one to do business with must meet a couple of criteria when shopping online. They need to be contactable by phone, not just email.

There have been many instances when people have liked a particular color they looked at on a computer screen and when they check a sample, or worse case scenario, the finished product, it’s completely different. Such is the nature of bamboo and shopping online.

Once you are happy with the color, then you can proceed to discuss production of your bamboo shades. Be clear on how soon before delivery takes place. You should not have to wait weeks for them to arrive.

You always have the option of hiring a local handyman in your area and while the whole project make cost a little extra, it will be well worth it. Better still, you may not have to look very far by scanning your list of relatives and friends.

Carport Way

Friday, October 26th, 2007

If you are looking for a low cost face lift for your home then you should consider building a carport. A new carport can add beauty and value to your home, and also add lots of protection and convenience for you and your car. Not only will your car thank you with decelerated sun damage to the paint and interior, but also you pets and family members will also think that getting out of your car into a dry all-weather area is the best thing since sliced bread.

Carport Construction Materials

Your new carport can be built from just about any sturdy building material you can think of. Piers can be either timber or steel posts, or more interestingly made with brick or cement block construction. No matter the material of choice it has to be strong enough to take the roof frame (usually made from timber or steel tubing) and the roofing material. The key choices are that it be strong, decorative, easy to paint and easy to access and maintain.

Strong Securing Is Required

It is most important that your new carport is anchored correctly to stop it blowing away in high winds. If it leans up against your house then a good place to start is bolting it securely to the side wall. If it is free standing then the posts need to be cemented into post holes or bolted to the concrete base. Exactly how this needs to be done depends your local building authority, so I recommend you check it out thoroughly before you start.

Top Choices

Whatever you decide to use for your roofing material will dictate the finished looks of your carport. Steel sheets are functional and strong and allow for minimal falls to keep the profile of your carport to a minimum. Conversely tiles will require a much larger fall so that you don’t get water backing up and leaking into the roof space. You can even choose some form of bituminous sheeting such as malthoid, but it’s a bugger work with and in my view look pretty crappy.

Can You build It Yourself

DIY or contract builder fro your new carport? For me it’s a no brainer. If you are anything like me a DIY project can take years to finish, so if you want it done quickly a builder is the safest and quickest way to go. Whatever choice you make please ensure you check out your local building authority before building, or committing to build, your new carport.

Bamboo Blinds And Children Don’t Mix!

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

The effect bamboo blinds can have on a home is one of simplicity and serenity. It’s the nature of the product.

If you are about to shop for bamboo blinds, then there is some shopping etiquette to be aware of which we’ll explore in this article. The end result should give you a happier buying experience plus keep some money in your pocket.

Bamboo Blinds

Understand that bamboo blinds are excellent for certain situations. If you have young children then think twice about installing them.

We’re not saying all kids are unruly however, because of the blinds generally light and delicate nature, they obviously won’t withstand too much physical pressure.

They would be perfect for a higher window out of the reach of kids but as far as providing window cover for a child’s bedroom, then go for something a little more sturdy.

Lifting Mechanisms

If there is a fault with the bamboo blinds structure it could be the lifting mechanisms. When shopping for blinds always try before you buy. In other words, test the lifting structure of the blinds.

If it performs in an effortless manner then that is great but if it is clumsy and difficult to operate, it will be frustrating. There are various types of lifting mechanisms available so always test before making a final decision.

Measure Before You Buy

Again, some preliminary work should be performed before heading to a bamboo blinds supplier.

Two things to remember; always carefully measure your window but if you are not sure, then ask a professional. Bamboo blinds hang a little differently than a traditional window covering. Also, make sure you have a solid guarantee on the product you purchase.

Unless you are a serious handyman then always buy made to order. For someone with the experience of installing window coverings then installing bamboo shades should be a comfortable task.

Kitchen Remodeling And Decorating

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

It’s a Saturday morning and you’re sitting there waiting for your coffee machine to stop its various gurgles and noises so you can have that all important cup of early morning coffee. Idly you glance about your kitchen and notice a fleck of paint on the corner of the door. It had been there for years but you never really took notice of it until now. Your gaze continues to wander and your eye gets caught by a patch of mildew seeping in just under the sink, then you notice the ugly brown color that your ceiling has turned just above where the cooker sits. The paint is faintly off color, and the lone wallpapered wall is beginning to look outdated and faded. You take a fortifying sip of your now ready coffee and decide that a little bit of kitchen remodeling is needed.

How do you go about it though? And how soon can you get into it? Now that you’ve finally noticed all the little bits and pieces of decay that you were quite successfully ignoring up until that moment, you can’t wait to get started on your little kitchen decorating project. That however is where the crunch comes in. Just how little do you want to keep your kitchen decorating project? Can you get away with slapping a fresh coat of paint on everything or will you need to go to the lengths of stripping the wallpaper off the wall, and finding out where that mildew stain might be headed.

Naturally enough it all depends on you and your budget, but if you can spare the time, energy and money, you’ll probably do better in the long run to get rid of all your problems at once. That would include stripping the wallpaper, replacing any carpeting or rugs that you might have, and perhaps even sanding down your wooden floors if you have those. If you’re fully “kitchen decorating” however then you’ll also need that all important coat of fresh paint to brighten up your kitchen.

You might also want to think about replacing those old lace curtains that you sewed yourself when you had nothing better to do. They’re also probably looking distinctly ratty by now. So go ahead and splurge on your kitchen decorating project and replace the curtains, and while you’re at it you might want to think of investing in a new set of tea towels as well. It doesn’t hurt to go all out when you can.

And when you’re finally done and can sit back and enjoy your new kitchen you can remember the Saturday morning that started it all. You’ll have no regrets however, since your kitchen decorating plan has landed you with a better kitchen than you ever expected. A feeling of contentment rushes through you as you bring your new coffee mug to your lips. Life doesn’t get any better than when you’re enjoying your efforts and labor of love.

Home Theater Set Up - How To Set Up Home Theater With An Unlimited Budget!

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Getting your home theater set up correctly from the outset will save you a lot of frustration and cost. Calibration services are a sensible way to go if you don’t have any experience in setting up home theater.

Home Theater HDTV

High definition television is a must today for any home theater set up. What’s the point of spending thousands of dollars on establishing your showpiece and then putting in a non high definition tv to drive it. Doesn’t make sense.

Okay, budget is going to restrict some but in all honesty, the television should be just about the first thing you give consideration to once you’ve got your room layout.

What size tv? Some may say this is not important but we’re thinking big in this article so how about going “the whole way” and grabbing yourself a 100 inch HDTV?

Home Theater Speakers

It’s a little unsightly to have speakers just sitting in the room and giving it a cluttered appearance. Why not investigate the possibility of having them hidden.

This may take a little planning if you are renovating an existing room in your home but for those building a house from scratch, a hidden surround speaker system makes good sense.

Home Theater Accessories

Furniture comes under the banner of accessories and home theater seating can only enhance your viewing experience. We’re talking true theater seating and a look online will net you plenty of avenues to purchase seating as part of your home theater set up.
Your lighting and curtains need to be automated. Realistically, if you are going to do this right then full automation is required. You are trying to create a true home theater experience.

To take it a step further, luxuries such as a lighted fibre-optic ceiling can only add an extra dimension to your home theater set up.

How about a fully integrated home theater system throughout the entire home? We’ll save that for another time.

The Advantages Of Wicker Furniture

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Wicker furniture is a staple for many different types of homes. This kind of furnishing is unique in that it suits a vast variety of styles and designs. Whether you live in a modern dwelling or a rustic home, wicker furniture is the ideal addition to your space and once more it is cheap furniture too.

The reason that wicker furniture is suitable for so many different types of homes is its versatile nature. The woven design is ideal for adding texture to any space and the natural material is warm and inviting. Wicker furniture offers the perfect combination of form and function.

A cottage home is the ideal spot for this kind of casual furnishing. I almost expect to find wicker furniture in a quaint little cottage style home. The relaxed feel and intricate texture of the woven chairs and tables is wonderful for this modest house design. Bringing this element into the cottage dwelling is the best way to complete the warm and inviting feel that you have when entering this kind of home.

Not all wicker furniture is so quaint. Majestic Victorian homes are often adorned with this woven furnishing. The natural wicker material is typically covered with a crisp, white paint. The tables are commonly embellished with a charming fabric that boasts an attractive but understated design.

Rustic homes, on the other hand, embrace the natural look and feel of wicker furniture. There are many primitive designs available that are striking and full of color and interest. I have to admit that the primitive wicker furniture is my personal favorite. I like to pair this look with antiques and old photographs.

Traditional homes filled with antiques, Victorian mansions and quaint cottage style homes are each ideal places for wicker furniture but let’s not forget contemporary designs as well. This kind of furniture is making headway in modern homes for good reason.

No matter how sleek and clean a home’s interior design theme is, texture is still a must. Adding wicker furniture into the mix is the ideal way of giving depth and interest to the space while still keeping in tune with the modern design. The appeal of natural elements is timeless no matter what the core design of the home is.

This furnishing is versatile, beautiful and inexpensive. With the many different uses of this kind of indoor outdoor furniture, there is no question why so many of us have adopted wicker furniture into our homes especially as patio furniture.
